Blockchain became popular as the underlying technology behind bitcoin, a cryptocurrency created in 2008 by one Satoshi Nakamoto. The blockchain can be defined as a database distributed among different participants, cryptographically protected, and organized into blocks of transactions that are linked together by mathematical algorithms.

Blockchain applications

Digital identity
Blockchain technology and its ability to decentralize the control of information can be very useful for the development of projects to manage digital identity and the set of data about us in cyberspace. The European Union is working on the creation of a "European digital identity wallet".

Cryptocurrencies
Blockchain technology allows the creation of cryptocurrencies. Transactions made with them are recorded in a public and decentralized manner, and are protected by cryptographic algorithms.

Smart contracts
Smart contracts are computer code that program contracts registered on a blockchain (Ethereum). Smart contracts are characterized because they can self-execute a series of actions that have been previously programmed in their source code. The blockchain facilitates that the smart contract can fulfill itself, autonomously and automatically, without intermediaries or mediators.

Tokenization of assets
Blockchain technology can be used to create representations of value called tokens. Tokenization can be defined as the transformation and digital representation of an asset within a blockchain; an example of this is NFTs (or non-fungible tokens), the digital version of art and collecting. The blockchain also enables the generation of metaverses which are networks of virtual environments where humans can interact directly.

NFTs
A non-fungible token (or NFT) is a unique unit of data stored on a blockchain that can be traded. NFTs can be associated with digital files, such as photos, videos and audio. Because each token is uniquely identifiable, NFTs differ from cryptocurrencies in that the latter are fungible. NFTs are assigned a kind of digital certificate of authenticity, a series of metadata that cannot be modified. In these metadata its authenticity is guaranteed and the starting value is recorded as well as all the transactions that have been made on it.

Metaverse and Web3
The metaverse is a virtual world that has been created to resemble external reality and with which we can interact using a series of devices that will make us think that we are inside it, interacting with all its elements. The metaverse offers as many opportunities as the real physical world, such as being able to create our own businesses within it, buy using only its own virtual currency, etc.

DeFi
Decentralized finance (DeFi) offers financial instruments without depending on intermediaries such as the stock market, brokers or banks that are executed on smart contracts within a blockchain. DeFi platforms allow people to lend or borrow funds from others, speculate on asset price movements using derivatives, trade cryptocurrencies, insure against risks and earn interest on savings-like accounts.

Registration, certifications and digital evidence
Blockchain technology is a very useful tool to guarantee the veracity of information or documents in digital format, from intellectual property rights, business secrets, property records or public tenders.

DAOs and governance
A decentralized autonomous organization (a DAO) is a structure whose governance is defined within a blockchain, so that it can establish its own mechanisms for financing and structuring operations autonomously. The rules governing a DAO are codified in a smart contract and arise to advance a common goal of a group of people, such as the financing of a project.

Testimonies - Blockchain Lawyers
Testimony of Judith Giner

Without Ricardo Oliva we could not have done it. How lucky to have this professional piece.
Testimony of Carlos Lluch
During the last two years we have worked with the firm Algoritmo Legal and, especially, with Ricardo Oliva, the start-up of an investment company with a complex security system in order to guarantee that the objective of the company could not be interrupted with the entry of new members. At the same time, we have controlled the design of a technological company in which to invest in order to carry out a pioneering technological project. Thanks to the firm’s good legal advice, we have been able to redirect a strategy erroneously defined by non-jurists and achieve both objectives. I recommend the services of Algoritmo Legal without any reservation.
Testimony of Ricardo Sánchez

I would like to thank Algoritmo Legal for developing our entire data protection policy (risk analysis and management design, impact assessment, cookie policy, issues related to international data transfers, etc.) for the insurtech Cobertoo, which I direct. Thanks to the work of the firm, we have managed to reverse the report of the Spanish Agency for Data Protection from “unfavourable” to “favourable” and, in this way, be able to continue in the Spanish financial sandbox. It is a luxury to have shared these summer months with Algoritmo Legal’s team of lawyers, especially Ricardo Oliva, analyzing every detail of our processes until the goal is achieved.
Testimony of Óscar Domínguez
I have known Algoritmo Legal’s lawyers for years, especially Ricardo Oliva, and I can say that they are well prepared and that they are very passionate about their work, which leads them to be one of the best law firms in matters of new technologies and businesses from Spain. I recommend it with my eyes closed.
Testimony of Hugo Martins

I hired Algoritmo Legal to advise me on the investment process of a Spanish technology company. They gave me great legal support throughout the negotiation process. Ricardo Oliva has shown deep knowledge about partner agreements, negotiating skills and that he speaks fluently about everything and everything that has to do with software and intellectual property. Thanks for everything.
